Re: The Game (Game Making Discussion) Posted on 21 Feb : 18:01
Y'know guys, a little maturity is never uncalled for. :P
Re: how do u become a admin (Game Making Discussion) Posted on 18 Feb : 22:43
A friend of mine regularly pumps out structured and clean 2-3 page posts in a few dozen minutes. I eventually ended up picking up his habit too (who wouldn't after a few years of page-long posts?) I like to think I make more sense than him though. :-D Sorry about the lengthy post - I will try to be more brief from now on.

In a nutshell, begging for mods is like telling the admins you are just going to screw around and will contribute just as well if you remained a regular member. If someone should be a mod, it should be someone who can and will have something to give to the community. Not just someone who "earned" it (note the quotation marks) by being around for a while - this does not mean they will be competant mods. It is not a privilege, it is a responsability that can make or break a community (ever stuck around for long in a community with bad/immature/abusive/inactive moderators?)

Also, Homer's "code" comes out as "Hi whats up i, good are you." In case this had been bugging you in any way. ;-P The letters are left-shifted from where they would normally be on the keyboard.

Edit: Typo.

"Hi whats up i, good are you"

That... does not sound close to being in english. I have to go with "foreign language" myself. :-P

What is it with everyone wanting to be a mod/admin? Either you will think it is all fun and games and do a pretty bad job of it (we all want power, do we not?) or you will take it seriously, quickly realize that it is a responsability above all else, and either start goofing off and doing a bad job or simply losing interest.

In my opinion, people who ask to be mods should not be made into mods. They are the kinds of people who almost always have very little to bring to a board/server/IRC channel/whatever as a moderator or who will cause problems through irresponsability somewhere down the line. There are so many pretty tempting buttons to click after all. This is not a position you hand out to people for fun or because you want to make them happy/they are your friend/have been here for a while/can beat the original Contra without using the 30 lives cheat. This is a position you hand out because someone will make the board a better place for everyone else.

Otherwise... what can I say, the quality of the moderation reflects heavily on the overall quality of the board in the long run. What comes out of badly- and properly-handed out moderation positions should be obvious.

I am sorry for posting a mini-rant so frankly. I hope I did not offend anyone. If you're gunning for a moderation position and feel offended, chances are you are one of those people I was talking about earlier and I do not have much else to say about that. Take it with a grain of salt. And if you're already a moderator and doing a great job of it, then I salute you and I hope things remain that way for a long time.

(Edit: By the way, I am not interested in being a mod and would turn it down. I do not have the motivation to enjoy it nor the time to do a good job. This post is not some freaky reverse psychology trick so do not misunderstand my intentions. :-) )

Beats me. When it's done. My buddy has a job and a social life (unbecoming of a programmer, really) so AFAIK he only works on it during weeknights. At least, that's when I know he's at home; wether he's too busy downloading porn to code is certainly not my business lol.

I'll see if I can get him to join and talk about it himself. I'm piggy-backing on his normal address at the moment (long story, lol) so I'm not sure if that's a problem for him.

Yeah, pretty sure. Will it be 3D?

As the screenshot clearly indicates, it is actually a 1D game. No 3D at all. :)

No, seriously, it is 3D, but sprite-based. I've seen it in action (well, what is done so far, which isn't much more than a very basic walk-around demo at this point) and it looks nice and old-school. A bit like Xenogears for the PSX did.

I also squeezed another screenshot out of him, in case anyone thinks I am some guy who just registered to pull a prank or something like that (lurked for a bit, but not much of a talker; I just joined because I thought this would be interesting material to some.)

(edit: linkified, for the sake of 56k modems (if any still exist.))

This is not a gameplay image. My friend, RuneLancer ("my friend" is getting old, seeing as he has a name) was toying around with various map design tools and I thought it would be cool enough to put up here. It's part of "debugland," his test map.

Gotta be. Earthland Realms was an MMO wasn't it?
Re: The Game (Game Making Discussion) Posted on 16 Feb : 09:01
I can ask him to send me more screenshots if you want.

Smithers: It's still in early developement. He put that there as a test map.

I know a guy working on it.
